• GI symptoms are very common among patients COVID-19. They can be the only clinical manifestation (atypical cases), can appear at the beginning, or during the course of the illness. Thus, physicians and Gastroenterologist must be aware of the possibility of COVID-19 in patients consulting for de novo GI symptoms.
• The main reason for GI symptoms in COVID-19, is the high expression of the ACE2 cellular receptor in the digestive tract, which is required by the SARS-CoV-2 virus to infect the human cells.
• Inflammation of the digestive tract, increase permeability, dysbiosis, and psychological stress triggered by COVID-19, are potential mechanism for developing Post-COVID-19 FGIDs/DGBI.
• Thus, it is very possible that we will start observing these patients in our practice. In fact, some evidence already suggest that.
