The gastrointestinal tract is closely related to the liver, and the gut microbiota is important in the gut-liver axis to affect liver physiology. The gut microbiota has been shown to be important in liver diseases, including fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. There are also laboratory and clinical studies to assess the role of modulating gut microbiota and their metabolites to treat liver diseases. In this talk, I will discuss how gut microbiota may affect liver disorders via the gut-liver axis, and illustrate the potential role of its modulation in clinical applications.
